VINTAGE HIGHLIGHTS
2023 was our 3rd warmest growing season on record after the 2015 and 2014 vintages. We had the warmest and driest August on record and if it was not for the rain in early September our harvest would have started before Labor Day Weekend. Three cheers for the rain! One of the interesting things about 2023 was the arrival of our first hail storm right after bloom. We have never seen a damaging hail storm in our vineyard since we started in 1971, so seeing it happen and the resulting damage was at first a little scary. While it looked like our yields might have been higher, the hail storm helped reduce the crop to a more desirable amount. The resulting fruit was excellent, with the heat in August producing lower acid in the grapes and nice full flavors.
WINEMAKING
The grapes were harvested from mid September to early October. Fermented in stainless steel and aged 10 months with 85% in oak barrels (majority neutral with 8% new) and 15% in stainless steel. Bottled in August 2024.
WINE PROFILE
The nose has notes of blackberries muddled with menthol. The palate is bright with notes of tart cherry and cranberry, followed by a spiced black tea finish.
THE STORY
Our Redland Cuvée is an homage to our original Pinot Noir that we began producing in the 80s. It is named Redland after the famous Jory soil that the vines grew in; an intense, mineral-rich soil that came from ancient volcanic deposits in the Dundee Hills. Its high iron content gives the earth a rusty hue, thus the hills are often referred to as the “Red Hills”. Our Redland Cuvée is an inclusive blend of Pinot Noir sourced from our Estate vineyards and Croft Vineyards across the Willamette Valley, bringing together distinct AVAs and soil types to create a symphony in wine that is made, French oak aged, and bottled in the beautiful Red Hills that we call home.
